Population-Adjusted Rates of Medical Malpractice Cases Highest in The Northeast
Get Data

This table displays the range of population-adjusted rates of incoming medical malpractice cases in 18 states, from a low of less than 1 case per 100,000 persons to about 20 cases per 100,000 persons. These rates seemingly have little association with population size as New York, the 3rd most populous state, has the highest rate, but New Hampshire (pop. rank 43) and Rhode Island (pop. rank 44), have the 4th and 5th highest population-adjusted rates, respectively.

Geography does appear to have some influence on medical malpractice filing rates as each of the five states with the highest population-adjusted rates are located in the northeastern United States.
