Contract Caseloads Climb for Fifth Consecutive Year

Incoming contract caseloads increased 65 percent in general jurisdiction courts in the 9 states able to report complete data between the benchmark year of 2001 and 2010. From 2001 to 2005, caseloads rose and then fell for an overall gain of 8 percent over that 4 year period (2% per annum). However, from 2005 to 2010, contract caseloads increased 52 percent (10.5% per annum), much of it occurring in 2008 with the onset of the recession. Between 2007 and 2008, the average increase in contract cases among the 9 states featured here was 22 percent (not shown).
